Did you know that everybody has treasures of talents hidden inside them? They are just waiting to be discovered and unleashed into this world so that we can fulfill our purpose.
I was writing the blog post; 4 Tricks to help you shop for free I mentioned that I wanted to buy a cardigan without realising that I had one already in my closet.
Then I thought; oh what about our gifts, how many of us wish we could be like somebody else or have their gift. Yet we have not actually taken the time to unearth our own gifts, our own hidden treasures which are lying inactive waiting to be discovered.
No treasure is left lying around where it could be stolen, it is kept under lock in a safe. We are the only ones with the keys to the safe which has our talents.
There is nothing wrong with admiring someone’s gifts but it is wrong to be jealous of their gifts.
Unearthing of our talents does not usually come easy it comes with a sacrifice see how I unearthed mine.
It took losing my job for me to start thinking about what other things I could do which were not my job. I remember being on maternity leave years ago and thinking I want to do something. I tried to brainstorm but nothing came up. As I reflect I can see that I was too comfortable to think outside my comfort zone.
Comfort zone makes us visionless to opportunities
Think about things you enjoy doing
I love doing hair, so I started writing for women’s online publications. I knew I had a lot of information which could empower other women and I am glad I did it.
An Accountant is like a goal keeper in a soccer game, so you are keeping an eye on those numbers. So if somebody in my team was making errors it meant it will mess up my figures so obviously I would pick that mistake and fix it. So I started training my team to reduce these errors and have a good month. After my job ended I decided to develop this training skill by getting more knowledge and a qualification.
So you see I am not really doing anything new today which I didn’t do yesterday. I have just developed myself to be better at what I did before.
Think about the things you used to do for free
Years ago when I was a college student, that was really at the beginning of my accounting career. I remember that I used to have my classmates coming to my room for private lessons. I would sacrifice my study time to offer free lessons to help people who were struggling.
So this group grew until It was too much for me to offer individual tutorials, I ended up booking people to come as a group. There was one guy in particular who was too embarrassed to come as a group as he was shy to ask questions, so he wanted individual lessons. This guy was neighbours with my boyfriend who is now my hubby. However, I explained to him that I couldn’t as this was taking too much of my study time and he understood which was good.
Even when I was at home during school holidays I had neighbours’ kids who came for tutoring. So now I am running workshops and classes empowering people, however when you read my story you can see I have been doing this for years.
Just do something
I always advise people to do something, and one of the questions I have been asked is;
What do I do, if I do not know what to do?
My response is always that surely there is something that you know how to do and people look at me with a puzzled face. One example I would give is very often I am asked to review people’s resumes and I usually notice that there is hardly anything on the skills. Most of them say I do not have any skills. Usually I would let this question pass and start talking about general things and while discussing I would pick a lot of skills there. When I ask them what about this skill? They usually say oh yeah I never thought about that.
I have never come across somebody who truly can’t do something, people just need guidance that’s all. If you are in this position and can’t think of anything, feel free to email me for mentoring.
After you have figured out what to do, you need to actually start. It doesn’t have to be perfect and it’s not meant to be perfect. Remember it is you doing your thing. You will learn as you go.
Hope this articles helps somebody Unearth and unleash their talents.
As always feel free to share and comment
