Should we mentor our kids to pursue talent instead of academics or should we maintain a balance so that kids can explore both? This can be a challenging question for parents. That led me to share my thoughts on this topic as a parent.
I am from a background where education was and still is the most important thing. When I was growing up my parents were focused on academic and ignored sport achievements. As my parents did not care about sports, I developed a negative attitude towards sports. This really didn’t bother me, as I knew that as long as I had top scores in my grades it was all that mattered.
I never used to care if my kids were number last in sports, right I am a product of my upbringing. My daughter quickly picked on this and told me that all she has to do is keep her grades high that’s all because she noticed that we did not really care about sports. At that moment I decided to embrace a more open approach because not all kids are academically gifted. There are many successful people who are doing extremely well just because they are talented.
I encourage my kids to focus on their studies and get good grades but I am also open to them developing in their gifts or talents. The reason being that in this modern day there are more opportunities in sports and creativity that can be explored. In any case for instance sports are an important aspect of our life as keeping fit is tied to our health. So If I do not encourage my kids towards sports they might develop a negative attitude towards fitness and exercise.
When you look at life in general isn’t it better to be happy and enjoy what one does that to do it for the money only. I see a lot of sports people or those in the Arts industry who are doing what they love and enjoying it. However having said that I believe education will always come in handy as one pursues their passion. As for me I am fulfilled right where I am now connecting with you as you read this article.

Do you go for talent over academic or vice versa or a balanced approach.
