Most people spend so much money on fitness equipment, dvds and apparel.  They start with the good intention of getting fit and getting their health back. However, they give up after investing so much money on fitness equipment.

Invest your time in fitness instead of investing your money on fitness equipment

 I didn’t want this to happen to me, neither do I want this to happen to you. So below I am sharing how I balance my fitness and finances;

Research and Identify what works for you before you invest in fitness equipment
There is a time I wanted to invest in a trend mill so that I would be able to do indoor workouts especially in winter.  I was actively shopping around and looking at the reviews. I then asked my friend about her fitness equipment as I wasn’t sure what brand to buy.

She responded by saying that she has set a gym in her garage with everything inclusive of a television but she never uses it.  I thought to myself I am different I would make sure I use it. However, it is not about talking but about actually doing it.  So I had to be truthful with myself.  You know I do not like to throw my money into the bin.

Anywhere I did not buy the equipment because I could actually see myself opting for outdoors. I love to walk, the feel of wind blowing on my face and I get refreshed from being outside.

Start exercising and get into a routine before spending money
When I started being really serious about my body, I used my normal shorts and tees.  I needed to make sure I was in it for the long haul before spending my money.
After a while when I noticed that I couldn’t do without exercising then I bought compression clothing.

Be intentional
I have got some beautiful dresses which I look forward to wearing in summer.  Every year these beautiful dresses motivate me to have my kind of perfect body so that I can fit. I know right, I said my kind of perfect, yeah that’s true because what’s perfect to me might not be perfect to someone else. So even though I struggle to wake up in the morning in winter, I still force myself knowing that when summer comes I would look good.  So I am intentional about my exercising.

Take action because change happens when you take action
One thing I know for sure is that:

Owning exercise equipment, apparel and DVDs does not make one fit, just as having prescription medicine and not taking it does not make one well

I was talking to my daughter about this and she was saying by the time she puts a DVD to play she just can’t be bothered. She ends up just watching it. I reminded her that exercise DVDs are not for watching they are for exercising.

Exercise dvds are not for watching they are for exercising

This got me thinking about how many people have invested in equipment which just lies in their houses idle.   What if you took that money and put it to clear other debts or paid your mortgage?  This money could have been used for something else like saving for that holiday you deserve.  I hope this will encourage you to get up and put the equipment you bought with your hard earned money to use.

Use your gym membership
Did you know that having a GYM membership on its own does not result in fitness? It is actually going to the gym and working out which will result in fitness.

Most people have gym memberships and they are paying every week or monthly and have never set foot in the gym.  The reason usually is the lack of time, as most people try to exercise in the evening after work.  If you have kids, you know this will never happen as parents will be rushing to pick the kids up.
So if you are a gym person try finding a gym near your workplace so that you can attend during lunch time.

There are some gyms where you can pay as you go, I suggest these kind of gyms instead of locking yourself in a contract.

Take advantage of sales
I tend to buy my fitness apparel on sale because I love a bargain.

Balance is Key
I am not a fitness coach but I am mum who loves to stay fit body wise, be financially fit and ensure I have set time for the things which are important to me. For me everything I do has to balance hence it has to be on budget.

Eat healthy
I know healthy foods are expensive as compared to junk. Believe me your body will thank you as you will have so much energy. In the end and you will save money on medical bills. As a mum I have to teach my kids to eat healthy by modelling a healthy lifestyle.  I always keep my fruit basket full and I do not store any unhealthy foods. That way I remove temptation.  Once in a while I do treat my kids to chocolates and crisps but I buy small quantities just so that I do not deprive them.

Exercise is not about money
I say so because I stay fit by walking outside, it is free and I also use YouTube videos.  I am not in any case an exercise fanatic but I keep reasonable fit.

    1. At least you eat healthy. Your body looks good you must be keeping active. I remember years ago I used to walk to work for an hour to and from and I was so fit.

  2. Hey, i am now 19 years old but back in the days when was 14 years old i was so good at running long distances, 1500 meters at school. But now i can’t run more than 200 meters without stopping for breather. So, i walk to school everyday….do you think its enough to keep me fresh and fit.

    1. Lol Bambie you are funny. 19 years is still very young and you should be able to run. If you are getting tired running 1500m which you used to do a couple of years ago, you probably need to up your exercise.
